How Nursing Agencies WorkAbout
Nursing agencies are an excellent way to vary your work throughout your nursing career and are an ideal challenge for someone who doesn't want to work in the same place for the rest of their lives.
But how do they actually work?
Many nursing agencies are based in large cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester as there is simply more demand for positions and nurses - if you want to get the best out of agency nursing then you should be willing to travel or live in or near one of these big cities.
Is an NHS trust needs a nurse but they don't have the budget to hire a permanent staff member, and it cannot be covered using the NHS' bank nurse scheme; they will approach a nursing agency to provide a candidate.
By being part of a nursing agency you allow yourself to apply and be considered for these roles, giving you opportunities that you may not have even known about if you worked as a permanent NHS nurse elsewhere.
Agency nursing can include all areas of the NHS across all departments - every department needs nursing staff to help with the day to day care for patients as well as more technical duties.
It's not just standard nurses that work for agencies either. There is a whole range of agency nurse staff in positions right through the NHS including paediatric nurses, neurological nurses and specialist mental health nurses.
As nursing agencies are private enterprises the wages for agency nursing can be higher than what you would be paid on the bank nurse scheme through the NHS, giving more incentive to work for an agency.
