Cygnet Health Care has been providing a national network of high quality specialist mental health services for over 30 years.

Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke provides an emergency admissions service for men and a pathway for women from low secure to rehabilitation including a specialist service for personality disorder.

The hospital has more than 16 acres of landscaped grounds and overlooks the Bristol Channel. This beachside location, just outside Weston-super-Mare, helps us provide a quiet, peaceful and therapeutic environment which can offer service users a broad range of therapies including CAT, CBT, Schema Therapy, EMDR & DBT.

The hospital provides 58 inpatient beds within a low secure setting, including a male PICU within the same secure perimeter. All bedrooms are single, with en-suite bathrooms, and each of the four wards has its own garden or terrace. There is a fully equipped gym and activities suite.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Specialty/ Ward Doctor to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke.

This role will be working 40 hours per week between Monday to Friday with an on-call requirement which includes 1 on call per week plus 1 weekend in every 6.

The Opportunity

As a Specialty / Ward Doctor you will have clinical responsibility inpatients under the direction of a Consultant Psychiatrist on one of our wards at Cygnet Kewstoke. You will work as part of a close-knit and caring team to include; Allied Health Professionals, Psychology, Management, Nursing and Support Staff.

In this role, you will carry out mental state examination of newly admitted patients along with assessment, appropriate investigation, diagnosis and treatment under the supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist. The women on this unit women may have a range of mental health difficulties, including personality disorder or mild eating disorders.

Each patient must be interviewed and re-assessed at a frequency appropriate to their individual clinical needs and sufficient to monitor changes and make timely modifications to the treatment plan. You will also prescribe and review medication under the supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist.

Participation in weekly Ward Rounds and in other multidisciplinary meetings, including Care Programme Approach Meetings (CPA’s), Mental Health Review Tribunals (MHRT’s) and Section 117 meetings, ensuring that full and up-to-date clinical information is available to the meeting and ensuring that medical decisions are implemented as planned.

An active role in contributing to treatment plans and therapeutic programmes, along with regular communication with ward staff to include morning handover meetings.

We Are Looking For People Who Have:

  • Full GMC registration and an MBBS (or equivalent) medical qualification
  • Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice along with Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity
  • The ability to demonstrate sound clinical judgment / experience in making clinical decision and managing risk and knows when to seek help
  • Excellent verbal / written communication skills along with the ability to interview, assess and treat patients and write clear comprehensive medical notes
  • Proven record of CPD (Continued Professional Development)
  • The ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Desirable: Section 12
  • Desirable: Royal College of Psychiatrists membership (MRCPsych) or equivalent

  • A formulated programme to assess your educational needs and to help you achieve the competencies necessary to help you progress to Consultant level.

  • An assigned educational supervisor who will review your progress weekly and oversee your educational development.
  • Support with MRCPsych exams.


 Please note: successful candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
