The Cavendish Coalition

Industry News

A new coalition of health and social care experts have come together to lobby on behalf of EU staff in the wake of the Brexit vote.

The coalition is formed of representatives from 29 organisations including, the RCN, The Royal College of Midwives, Unison, NHS Employers, Care England and the Registered Nursing Home Association. (Full list at the end of the article)

The Cavendish Coalition is committed to ensuring that the NHS can secure a workforce supply as the United Kingdom negotiates its way out of the EU.  One of the coalition’s first moves has been to submit evidence to a cross party enquiry that will examine options for guaranteeing the status of EU nationals living in the UK.

Janet Davies, RCN chief executive and general secretary said:

“Our health and social care services have been relying on hardworking and talented EU nurses and others for many years. The first priority must be to guarantee the futures of these committed EU staff”

She continued

“Allowing any ongoing ambiguity is the wrong way of treating people who care for our friends and family everyday, and continues to make recruitment and retention even more difficult."

Many people, including MSI Group CEO Nick Simpson, have backed the IPPR’s call to grant automatic rights to British Citizenship to EU nationals who work as doctors, nurses and physiotherapists.

In an interview with The Global Recruiter Nick commented:

“Historic cuts to nursing training places, the recent abolition of bursaries for student nurses, changes to Tier 2 visa requirements, and last year’s caps on agency pay have all contributed to damaging talent pipelines. Without EU workers the NHS would simply fall over. With this in mind, we fully support the IPPR’s recommendation,”

Here at MSI we know the immeasurable value that ALL of our nurses bring to the NHS and will continue to support them.
